Do ebikes require a license or registration?
The answer is no. In 2001 the Motor Vehicle Act was amended to include a class of Power Assisted Bicycles. Transporation Canada has adopted guidelines and each province has modified these guidelines to fit their territory. See Transport Canada for articles on Power-Assisted Bicycles. These guidelines include a max speed of 32km/h, continuous motor power under 500 watts, and an on/off switch to disengage the motor. Each province has extended these guidelines to include the minimum age of an operator to be the same as a drivers license. eg. 16 in BC, 14 in Alberta.
So a license is not needed to ride an ebike nor is registration necessary from an insurance provider. We do recommend making sure that you have recorded your VIN, motor and battery numbers with your Home Insurance provider in case of theft, fire, etc. This can alleviate potential future problems. We also record this information to ensure warranty claims are processed properly.
